Application of RFID Technology in Animal Management

In the past ten years, animal epidemics have broken out all over the world, seriously affecting the livestock industry all over the world, especially in Europe. This has attracted great attention from countries all over the world, especially European countries. Governments are urged to quickly formulate policies and adopt various measures. Therefore, all parts of the world have strengthened the animal management of animal husbandry, and the identification and tracking of animals has become one of the main measures taken by countries. For example, the UK government mandates various tracking and identification methods for cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, horses and other breeding animals.

Identify and track animals

Animal identification and tracking refers to the use of specific RFID ear tags to correspond to identified animals through certain technical means and can track and manage the relevant attributes of animals at any time.

Identifying and tracking various animals can enhance the control and surveillance of exotic animal diseases, protect the safety of native species, and ensure the safety of international trade in animal products. It can strengthen the government’s vaccination and disease prevention management of animals, improve animal disease diagnosis and reporting capabilities, and emergency response to animal epidemics at home and abroad. Therefore, the identification and tracking management of animals is not only the need of animal husbandry, but also the behavior of national governments and international behaviors.
Identify and track cattle
Currently, a tracking system for cattle has been established in Europe. In September 1998, plans for a bull tracking system were announced in the UK. At the end of 1999, the member states of the European Community implemented the system plan.
British government regulations require digital identification of cattle born or imported after 1 July 2000. Identification and registration of cattle includes identification, farm records and permits. Identification tags must be installed within 20 days of a cow’s birth. The identification tag has the cow’s identification number. This identification code will accompany the life of the cow. In farm records, all circumstances involving the birth, importation, movement and death of each cow are recorded. Each cow has a CTS license that stores all records of the cow’s life. CTS is a computerized system established in the UK to track and manage cattle. The UK government pays for its set-up and initial use phases.
Identify and track pig
From November 1, 2003, the UK began to implement new pig identification standards. The new standard provides different identification requirements for all pigs sent direct to the slaughterhouse for less than one year, and for pigs older than one year to any other destination.
Identify and track sheep
From January 1, 2008, European regulations require the electronic identification of sheep. In order to verify the performance of the electronic identification system, Delta started a real-time electronic identification and digital transmission experiment in the actual environment in March 2004. Farmers, ranches and slaughterhouses choose different electronic product identification systems. The test program was completed in March 2005 and the report was submitted in June of the same year.

In addition, the UK government has mandated that all horses be identified and tracked from 30 June 2004.

Currently, widely used animal identification methods include: ear tags, back tags, necklaces, tail and leg marks, etc. The practice of electronic identification of animals has shown in recent years that RFID among electronic identification methods is playing an increasingly important role in animal management.
